Jockey Welfare Program 'Riding into the Future'

The study into the Welfare of Retired Jockeys was commissioned in 2001 in response to a call by the Minister for Racing for an investigation into Jockey Welfare.

The study was conducted by the Victorian University of Technology (VUT) and looked at current trends and issues relating to the retirement of jockeys. Eleven recommendations relating to jockey representation, welfare assistance, financial security, training and employment, mentoring and research were documented in the final report.

In response, RVL in conjunction with the Victorian Jockeys Association (VJA) established a working party to consider the recommendations and develop a program for implementation.

This report documents the response of the Working Party and the actions to be taken by RVL and the VJA in providing improved retirement and welfare support services and strategies to jockeys in Victoria.

Following the implementation of this report it is the aim of RVL to develop on-going services in relation to the financial and vocational welfare of other industry participants including stablehands, trackriders and trainers.
