Flemington is renowned as Australia's premier racecourse. It is home to the Southern Hemisphere's richest race - the $6.175 million Emirates Melbourne Cup - but also hosts seven other Group 1 races during its four-day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Flemington is Australia's oldest continuing metropolitan racecourse - the first race meeting held was on the rough river flats beside the Maribyrnong River in March 1840 when Melbourne town was barely five years old.
Just six kilometres from the heart of Melbourne, Flemington is easily accessible by public transport with trains running from the city direct to the racecourse gates while trams also run from the city and stop right outside the course.
The Grandstand, completed in 2000, is the showpiece of Flemington and gives the Victoria Racing Club's 24,000-plus Members and their guests the ultimate in raceday comfort.
