Spring Racing Carnival - September to November 2013
Australians love thoroughbred horse racing and each year the nation celebrates the arrival of the Spring Racing Carnival. But in no place more than Melbourne does a city get behind its sport and from September until November Melbournians flock to the track in their hundreds of thousands, they make heroes of the horses and celebrities of the jockeys, trainers are worshipped and the small punter becomes an expert form analyst.
The racing is unrivalled and led by the three Group 1 jewels in the Carnival crown – the $2.5 million BMW Caulfield Cup, $3.05 million Sportingbet Cox Plate and $6.2 million Emirates Melbourne Cup. The latter is the Carnival’s richest race and quite rightly dubbed ‘the race that stops a nation’™.
While the three jewels in the Carnival crown shine brightest, the 65-day racing program spans the entire state of Victoria, including numerous country cups conducted at the state’s picturesque country racetracks, and offers a total prize pool of more than $50 million.
The Carnival spans a great many special events, including the Emirates Melbourne Cup Parade which sees the city streets fill with fans eager to catch a glimpse of the Carnival’s banner jockeys and trainers, or behold the glistening Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy. There is also an array of glamorous social events which dot the calendar, together with the iconic fashion which goes hand-in-hand with the Carnival.
