Situated 25 kilometres from the city along the Princes Highway, Sandown became Melbourne's first dual-circuit racecourse in March 2003 with the completion of a major redevelopment, which established two separate tracks known as Hillside and Lakeside.
The two tracks share some sections of the course, but are defined principally by two separate home turns. Lakeside also utilises the full 45-metre width of the main straight, whilst Hillside uses the outer 30 metres of the straight.
Sandown hosts more meetings each season than any other Victorian racecourse, with a total of 37 race days distributed across the Hillside and Lakeside tracks.
Sandown's premier race day is Sandown Classic Day on Saturday 12 November which concludes the Spring Racing Carnival in metropolitan Melbourne. This family-oriented feature meeting is highlighted by two Group 2 events - the Sandown Classic (2400m) and Sandown Guineas (1600m) for three-year-olds.
Blessed with one of the finest racing surfaces in Australia, Sandown is an undulating course with a testing rise from the 400 metre mark to the winning post of 0.65 metres on the Hillside circuit and 0.9 metres on the Lakeside track.
Sandown boasts excellent, spacious facilities for indoor and outdoor enjoyment. Regarded as the premier entertainment complex in Melbourne's south-east, the venue is easily accessed by car or train and offers ample free parking.
