Mazzacano does it again in the Australian Steeple

Robbie Laing pulled off one of the greatest training feats of his career when jumps star Mazzacano, made a remarkable comeback after a two year absence to win the Australian Steeplechase (3900m) in magnificent style.

“This horse has got plenty of ability. When he goes he picks them up quickly,” said Laing.

“You’d have to think the Crisp Steeple at set weights is his next target, then maybe the Grand National Steeple or an overseas campaign.”

Mazzacano won the 2007 Australian Steeplechase and today, became only the fourth horse to win the famous race twice. The last horse to win the double was Tongalla in 1937 and 1938.

Patiently ridden by Gavin Bedggood, Mazzacano carried the top weight of 69.5kg in the $101,500 feature, and swooped home in the last few strides.

“That was a huge effort, he’s just so tough, so many people need to be thanked for getting this horse back. He’s a lot better this time and he felt 100 per cent coming back to scale,” said an emotional Bedggood.

Meanwhile trainers Cindy and Colin Alderson celebrated their success with pint-sized jumper Hooker Road, in the $101,500 Australian Hurdle (3400m).

“We always thought he’d be better at his second campaign, he’s fantastic over the fences. His tenacity and stamina got him there today,” said Cindy.

Winning jockey Brad McLean was as equally impressed.

“He jumped so well today, even though he knuckled on landing over the last, he toughed it out. He’s a bit like another little horse I ride (Some Are Bent), he’s small, but he’s got a big heart.”

Following today’s jumps results, the current leaders of the 2009 J.J. Houlahan Jumps Championship are Hooker Road (20 points), jockey Brad McLean (38 points) and trainer Ciaron Maher (36 points). To view the full points table click here.
